HISTORY OF HOMENETMEN (General)

The Armenian General Athletic Union and Scouts, known as HOMENETMEN, is a non-profit organization established in 1918 in Constantinople by Shavarsh Krisian, Hovhannes Hintlian, and Krikor Hagopian.

From its inception, the organization has had a dual purpose. Firstly, adhering to the principle of „strong mind, strong body,“ Homenetmen has provided Armenian youth with moral, physical, and psychological education outside the formal school setting. Secondly, it has aimed to impart the richness of Armenian culture and heritage to the youth, while simultaneously preparing them to become exemplary law-abiding citizens in their respective countries.

Over more than a century, Homenetmen has faced both challenges and successes, undergoing significant growth and development. After its establishment in 1918, the organization quickly expanded, opening four additional chapters in different parts of Constantinople. This rapid growth necessitated the creation of by-laws, which were promptly drafted. In 1920, the founders of Homenetmen were invited to the independent Republic of Armenia to share their knowledge and experience, with the goal of establishing Homenetmen chapters in the new republic.

Following two months of intensive planning, proposals for the new initiative were approved. However, the political situation in the region began to deteriorate, making the establishment of Homenetmen chapters in the Republic of Armenia unfeasible. By 1922, the chapters in Constantinople were forced to cease their activities, and the organization’s leaders dispersed across the globe.

About Homenetmen Vienna

Homenetmen Vienna was originally established in 1990 as part of the global Homenetmen family, dedicated to fostering Armenian youth through scouting and sports. After a period of inactivity, the chapter was successfully re-established in 2015, marking a new era of growth and engagement within the Armenian-Austrian community.

Since then, Homenetmen Vienna has actively organized events to strengthen the bonds of its members. In 2016, we participated in our first camping event at the Artsakh Panagum. The following year, we proudly hosted Homenetmen’s First European Youth Assembly, bringing together young Armenians from across the continent. Our members also took part in the 11th Pan-Homenetmen Jamboree in 2018 and have continued to engage in cultural, social, and scouting activities.

Today, Homenetmen Vienna remains committed to its mission of shaping strong, responsible, and community-oriented individuals. Through scouting, sports, and cultural programs, we provide a space where young Armenians in Austria can connect with their heritage while developing valuable life skills.

Join us in preserving our traditions and building a strong future for Armenian youth in Vienna!
